The return of Michaelmas Goose …

How quickly the year turns!  We are approaching Michaelmas again and we’re delighted to give you details of our next Supper Club to be held next Friday 27th September.

Some of you may remember the same weekend last year when we started our campaign to revive this old English tradition of eating “green” Goose to commemorate the victory over the Spanish Armada in 1588.  Queen Elizabeth 1st was reportedly feasting on Roast Goose when she received final confirmation that the Armada had been driven from English Waters – albeit, most historians now suggest, this may have had more to do with favourable “protestant” winds rather than English naval valor!  Elizabeth is said to have mandated that from that date forward, every Englishman should eat Roast Goose on Michaelmas to remember this glorious moment!

Great anecdote or historical fact, we are taking it as a pretext to celebrate one of the most delicious English birds.  We will, of course, keep some of this year’s flock to be fattened on grain for Christmas (we will be serving this as the centrepiece of our traditional Christmas Day Lunch at the farm and will be selling them in the shop for you to cook at home) but our “green” ie pasture fed geese are already at their full weight in terms of meat and the flesh (though certainly not green in colour!) is quite delicious.  Anyone visiting the farm over the last couple of months will have seen the geese (and ducks) delighting in their extended enclosure as they have cleared the grass and weeds around their pond.  Do join us then to taste this very time-limited traditional treat at our Supper Club on the evening of Friday 27th September when we will be serving a four course menu: Goose Liver Crostini, Stuffed Goose Neck with pickled damsons, Whole Roast Goose stuffed with Sage and Onion served with our Alouette Roast potatoes and a dessert inspired by treats from the Fairground in celebration of the Country’s largest Feast, the Nottingham Goose Fair still held on the Michaelmas Weekend.

Tickets are selling fast for what promises to be a joyous Friday evening at the farm.  If you would like to join us, the remaining tickets are available by clicking here.

We look forward to welcoming you to our restaurant over the coming days.
