The return of game to the menu this weekend

A perfect, clear evening to see the Hunter’s Moon – a time to think about game and nature’s abundant larder of delicious, healthy foods all around us. Not only is wild game tasty, lean and healthy, but it should be a key part of the rural economy – it is essential for farmers that the number of game animals are strictly controlled to limit predation of crops and trees. Unfortunately, the supermarkets and food supply chain currently have no place for game meat with the result that much is burned or buried. Dismayingly, this is often cheaper than paying people to take the meat away – the current “farm gate” price for venison can be as low as £1kg and rabbits, for the most part, cannot be sold at any price!

With your help, we hope to start to change this by keeping game on our menu thoughout the winter months! This weekend we are celebrating with our Hunter’s Moon Supper Club for which there are still some tickets available – the evening will be a celebration of game and wild food and the first time we’ve featured game on our menus since last winter. For the dinner itself, the menu is Wild Rabbit Rillette, Scottish Chanterelle Soup, Roe Deer Wellington and Damson Pavolva – do come and join us by clicking here.

For the rest of the weekend we will be serving Rabbit Rillette, Rabbit and Mustard and Muntjac Chiili con Carne in the restaurant.
