So it really is high summer – 1st August and, although the weather’s close and, occasionally, stormy, we do seem to have some settled heat at last. For any of you who have been holding off on visiting us, now really is the time! The heat and moisture are bringing the best out in the gardens, the parasols are deployed throughout and the menu is full with great vegetable dishes and spectacular seafood from Cornwall.
Perhaps the two most distinctive dishes this week are the plump Grilled Cornish Mackerel served with our own new beetroot and horseradish salad – a perfect evocation of Portuguese seaside holidays for those of us stuck in Blighty – and the Worton Mezze board a celebration of all that’s freshest in our garden – at the moment this comprises Burnt Aubergine, Tomatillo Salsa, Comfit Garlic, day-picked crudités and a sourdough flatbread. How could you resist?
On the floral side, the sustained sun and heat mean that, at last, the Dahlias are coming into bloom – the cutting garden is coming into its Stained Glass best. Timing could not be better as we have the trophy workshop of the summer scheduled for Friday 16th August – the irrepressible Arthur Parkinson – garden writer, illustrator and florist – will lead a Dahlia workshop discussing how best to grow these spectacular blooms, how organically to control pests and, most importantly, how to present the most spectacular arrangements. Tickets are selling quickly for this unique workshop but we do still have availability. Click the link below to book you slot!
We look forward to welcoming you to our restaurant over the coming days.
