Always our first blossom of the year …

A perfect symbiosis – on these bright sunny Spring days, our industrious and hungry bees are busily taking advantage of the earliest hedgerow blossom – Mirabelles.  A late frost may intervene to damage the blossom or stop the fruit setting but at present the bushes which dot our hedgerows are abuzz with thousands of bees taking the nectar and collecting pollen.  Always the very first blossom here at the farm, the Mirabelles form the first orchard banquet of the year for our honey bees and their industry holds out the promise of a delicious harvest of hedgerow plums in late July.  A great advert for traditional, mixed hedgerows with trees flowering over a protracted period and providing early season nourishment to a great range of pollinators.

Given the beautiful warm weather that appears to be set for the weekend,  we have shifted the menu towards Cornish seafood.  Cock Crabs, Lemon Sole (just coming in to season), Cuttlefish (in its prime), Cockles and more of the delicious St Austell Bay Mussels.  All will be available in the restaurant and for “wet” sales in the shop if you prefer to cook at home.

Finally, just a reminder that Mother’s Day is swinging in to view.  Often our busiest Sunday of the year, this time looks to be no exception and tables are booking up quite quickly.  We will, of course, be running our normal menu with a Sunday Roast of 18 Hour Saddleback Shoulder.  There will also be whole Roast Chicken available for you to carve yourself at the table – following our Spring Chicken Supper Club on Friday 28th, we will continue the theme through to Sunday as we serve up Roast Transylvanian Naked Neck Chicken. Click here to book a table and here to send an email if you want to pre-order a whole chicken.
