Delicious Winter Greens from the farm this week

Lots of winter greens this week. Cavolo Nero, Kale, Spinach, Chard and, of course, lots of wonderful Cabbage. My particular favourite at the moment is the wondrous January King (picture above) but we have white, red and sweetheart cabbages as well. Anyone feeling they need a tonic of minerals and vitamin C – these really are the perfect late winter vegetable!

For those who favour something lighter and crisper, we also have a wide range of salad greens from Italy and beyond. Raddicchio is perfectly in season and we have both the round Chioggia style and the longer Treviso versions. Great as an addition to salads, these are also very good griddled as an accompaniment to a roast of any kind.

In Cornwall the storms have eased a little and we have a wider selection of fish and seafood. Plaice looks fantastic as does the John Dory or St Peter’s Fish – small but with sweet, dense flesh and on our list for the first time this week. For anyone, like me, craving a taste of the south, our fresh Cornish Sardines will be a must!

On the Bakery/Takeaway menu, we have two new and quite delicious items. On the savoury side there is Flamiche – a speciality of Picardy in Northern France – our own farm-grown leeks melted in butter and cream and then wrapped in puff pastry. Rich and unctuous, a slice would make a perfect lunch served with a bitter winter salad of endive or radicchio. For dessert, you could try one of our signature Eccles cakes or our new arrival – Salted Rye and Chocolate cookies.
